| progesterone | hormone that regulates uterine conditions during pregnancy |
| parathyroid hormone (PTH) | hormone that regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism |
| serotonin | hormone that constricts blood vessels and acts as a neurotransmitter |
| adrenohypophysis | anterior lobe of the pituitary gland; also called anterior pituitary |
| adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) | hormone that stimulates secretion from adrenal cortex |
| growth hormone (GH) | hormone that influences growth |
| neurohypophysis | posterior lobe of the pituitary gland; also called posterior pituitary |
| testes | located on both sides within the scrotum in the male; secrete testosterone |
| thyroid | located in front of the neck; secretes triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine(T4), and calcitonin |
| polyuria | excessive urination |
| pancreatitis | inflammation of the pancreas |
| hypoparathyroidism | hyposecretion of the parathyroid glands |
| goiter | enlargement of the thyroid caused by thyroid dysfunction, tumor, lack of iodine in the diet, or inflammation (goiter=throat) |
| hypothyroidism | a condition of hyposecretion of thyroid hormone, resulting in sluggishness, slow pulse, and often, obesity |
| blood glucose | measurement of the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood; also called blood glucose |
| postprandial blood sugar (PPBS) | measurement of blood sugar (glucose) level after a meal (commonly 2 hours later) |
| computed tomography (CT) | CT of the head is used to obtain a transverse (horizontal) view of the pituitary gland |
| adrenalectomy | removal of one or both adrenal glands |
| thymectomy | removal of the thymus |
