What is constipations? Infrequent or difficulty passing faeces and it will often be dry and hard
What are the possible causes of constipation? Excess or lack of fibre in the diet Excessive over grooming or ingestion of non edible objects Dehydration
What is obesity? When an animal has an excess of body fat that is enough to impair health, welfare and quality of life
What are the possible causes of obesity? Overfeeding High levels of lipids in the diet Lack of exercise
What is Pseudo-anorexia? The animal wants to eat but can not physically
What is True anorexia? No desire to eat
What is the definition for dehydration? When the body is losing more fluid than it is taking in
What are the possible causes of dehydration? Lack of water intake Excessive sweating Vomiting and diarrhea Overheating
What is the cause of Type 1 diabetes? Immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin
What is the cause of Type 2 diabetes? Poor diet (and obesity)
Which amino acid is essential for cats? Taurine
Which vitamin are guinea pigs unable to synthesise themselves? Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
Methylxanthines that are commonly found in chocolate are toxic to which pet species? Cats and dogs
How are the common treatments for toxicity? Induce vomiting Enema Activated charcoal – prevents absorption whilst it passes through Treatment of symptoms
Xylitol is toxic to dogs, what food stuffs is xylitol found in? Sugar-free alternatives (especially peanut butter)
Which vitamin is essential but toxic to cat is high quantities? Vitamin A
