| Term | Definition |

| weathering | rock is broken through the force of another substance |
| erosion | the action where substances such as rock and soil are moved from one location to another |
| renewable resources | a resource which can be renewed or replaced easily |
| non renewable resources | a resource that cannot be replaced easily |
| mineral | a solid non living substance that occurs in nature |
| rock | a naturally occuring substance made of two or more minerals and possibly fossils |
| Igneous rock | rock that is formed when magma cools |
| Sedimentary rock | rock that is formed when sand and small rocks compact and cement together |
| Metamorphic rock | rock that is formed under intense heat and pressure |
| Luster | the shininess of a mineral |
| Hardness | how easily a mineral is scratched |
| Cleavage | the pattern or angles in which a mineral breaks apart |
| Color | the visible color of a mineral |
| Streak | the color of the powder a mineral leaves on a ceramic tile or plate |
