keratin Keratinocytes eventually become filled with a tough, fibrous pro-tein
Melanocytes contribute colored pigments to the skin and serve to decrease the amount of ultraviolet (UV) light that can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin.

stratum germinativum is often used to designate stratum basale
stratum spinosum or “spiny layer” of the epidermis is formed from 8 to 10 layers of irregularly shaped cells with very prominent intercellular bridges, or desmosomes.
Stratum granulosum is where the process of sur-face keratin formation begins.
keratohyalin Cells are arranged in a sheet two to four layers deep and are filled with intensely staining granules
