Non-Fiction Vocab

Non-fiction vocabulary review

TermDefinition
Non-fiction Writing that includes factual information about real people, places, events, and things.
Captions Words to explain an illustration or photograph; usually placed underneath or beside the image.
Diagram Shows an idea being explained using sketches or drawings; usually includes labeled parts.
Glossary Alphabetical list of definitions of new words and terms contained in a text.
Index Alphabetical listing of topics along with page numbers of where they are found in the text
Table of contents Identifies the key topics of a text in the order they are found in the text.
Title page Lists the names of authors/ illustrators, publishers, publishing date.
Headings Announces the larger topics that will be covered, indicating what the passage is about. Helps the reader identify topics throughout the text.
Subheadings Headings given to smaller (more specific) sections within a larger (broader) topic. Helps the reader navigate through sections of the text.
Illustrations Drawings to help the reader visualize something explained in the text.
Maps Show where things and places are located in the world.
Graphs Visually displays how numbers and amounts of things compare to each other. Helpful in making sense of a lot of numbers and data.
Tables Charts of information presented in visual ways. Often used to compare data.
Textboxes Gives additional (often interesting ) information about a topic.
Bold letters Dark, thick writing to focus the readers attention on important keywords, headings, and sections.
Italics Slanted writing that identifies new or important words.
Timelines Charts that help readers see the sequence of important events about a topic.
Sidebars Give additional information related to a topic or picture; usually located at the side of a page.
Labels Used to identify parts of a diagram, picture or page; often arrows or lines connect the labels to the parts being identified.
Photographs Pictures taken with a camera to show how things look in real life.
