Vocabulary for Theory of Evolution

TermDefinition
radioactive decay happens when a radioactive isotope breaks down into a new isotope.
artificial selection the selective breeding of organisms (by humans) for specific desirable characteristics
convergent evolution the process by which unrelated species become more similar as they adapt to the same kind of environment
divergent evolution the process by which two or more related by reproductively isolated populations become more and more dissimilar
parent isotope a radioactive isotope
daughter isotope a stable isotope that does not decay
natural selection the process by which evolution occurs
adaptation is a trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in a given environment
molecular biology the field of biology that studies the composition, structure, and interactions of cellular molecules - such as nucleic acids and proteins
evolution change in species over time
analogous structure describes features of different species that are similar in function and appearance but not in structure or origin
homologous structrue Structures that are similar in unrelated organisms
vestigial structure reduced structures that are no longer used
comparative anatomy the study of the similarities and differences in the structures of different species.
comparative embryology the study of the similarities and differences in the embryos of different species
