ecosystem all the living and nonliving things in an area
forests an ecosystem that contain any trees
grasslands an ecosystem with fertile soil covered by tall grasses
lakes a larger body of freshwater surrounded by land
ponds a small body of freshwater, surrounded by land
oceans a large body of salt water
terrestrial ecosystem a land-based ecosystem
aquatic ecosystems a water -based ecosystem
estuary a body of water in which freshwater from a river meets and mixes with salt water from the ocean
salt marsh a flat area of land that salt water overflows
producer a living thing that makes its own food (generally plants)
photosynthesis the process in which plants use energy from the sun to make their own energy
consumer an organism that gets energy by eating other living things (generally animals)
herbivore an organism that eats almost only plants
carnivore an organism that eats almost only animals
omnivore an organism that eats both plants and animals
decomposer an organism that gets energy by breaking down wastes and dead plants and animals
organism a living thing
food chain a model that shows how energy flows from one organism to the next
model something that represents a real object, event or process
food web several food webs connected
energy pyramid a model that show the amount of energy changes as it moves through a food chain or food web
interact when things come into contact with and affect one another
predator animals that hunt for other animals for food
prey animals that are hunted
competition the demand for a resource by two or more organisms
