| Kingdom | large taxonomic group, consisting of closely related phyla |
| Phylum | in classification, a group of closely related classe |
| Class | in classification, a group of closely related orders |
| Order | (biology) taxonomic group containing one or more families |
| Family | (biology) a taxonomic group containing one or more genera |
| Genus | A classification grouping that consists of a number of similar, closely related species |
| Species | A group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring |
| Bacteria | Domain of unicellular prokaryotes that have cell walls and usually reproduce by cell division and can live in almost any environment |
| Archaea | Domain of unicellular prokaryotes that have cell walls that live in harsh environments where other organisms could not survive |
| Eukarya | includes all eukaryotic organisms, organisms that have a true nuclear membrane enclosing the DNA, such as protists, plants, fungi and animals. |
| Protista | a kingdom of mostly one-celled eukaryotic organisms that are different from plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi |
| Plantae | A kingdom made up of complex, multicellular organisms that are usually green, have cell walls made of cellulose, cannot move around, and use the sun's energy to make sugar by photosynthesis. |
| Fungi | Kingdom composed of heterotrophs; many obtain energy and nutrients from dead organic matter |
| Animalia | kingdom of multicellular eukaryotic heterotrophs whose cells do not have cell walls |
| Autotroph | An organism that makes its own food |
| Heterotroph | organism that obtains energy from the foods it consumes; also called a consumer |
| Cladogram | a branching diagram showing the cladistic relationship between a number of species. |
| Dichotomous Key | a key for the identification of organisms based on a series of choices between alternative characters |
| Taxonomy | The scientific study of how living things are classified |
| multicellular | Consisting of many cells |
| unicellular | A single celled organism |
| Carolus Linnaeus | (1707-1778) Founder of taxonomy, the branch of biology concerned with naming and classifying organisms. Developed two part system of naming organisms. |
