QuestionAnswer
alveoli tiny air sacs by which oxygen enters and carbon dioxide leaves via the bloodstream during breathing; found on the tips of the bronchioles
lungs two organs that pass oxygen into every red blood cell carried through their capillaries; expands to suck air in and shrinks to force air out
bronchi a branch of the trachea that carries air to the lungs; it further divides into the bronchioles
mouth has a tongue that helps to shape sounds in the larynx; a secondary channel to move air to the throat
bronchiole The final, smallest branches of the lungs' air passage
nasal passage An opening, lined with tiny hair-like cells, that channels air from the nostrils to the throat and has odor receptors
diaphragm A muscular wall that pulls air into the lungs by contracting downwards
nostrils Either of the openings in the nose
epiglottis A flaplike structure made of cartilage that stops food from entering the larynx and lungs
pharynx A tube that extends from the nasal cavity down the neck to the esophagus; also called the throat
pleura A membrane enveloping the lungs
trachea Carries air to and from the lungs; also called the windpipe
larynx Also known as the voice box, this hollow passageway links the throat to the trachea
