Vocab based on erosion/deposition
| Term | Definition |

| Flood plain | a low-lying area adjacent where excess water spills onto from the river channel |
| Oxbow lake | A curved lake formed at a former oxbow where the main stream of the river has cut across the narrow end and no longer flows along the loop of the bend. |
| Meander | A winding curve or bend of a river |
| Delta | Wetlands that form as rivers empty their water and sediment into another body of water, such as an ocean, lake or another river |
| Levee | A natural or artificial wall that blocks water from going where we don't want it to go |
| Drainage basin/ watershed | Any area of land where precipitation collects and drains off into a common outlet, such as into a river, bay or other body of water |
| Tributary | A river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake |
| Cutbank | Found on the outside of a bend in a river, caused by the moving water of the river weathering away the earth |
| Point bar | located on the inside of a bend in a river, the water slows down and sediment is dropped to the river bed |
| Humus | the organic component of soil, formed by the decomposition of leaves and other plant material by spoil microorganisms. |
| Stream discharge | the volume or amount of water flowing in a stream |
| Erosion | the moving of sediment |
| Weathering | the breakdown of rock material into sediment |
| Mass movement | the downhill movement of sediment by gravity acting alone |
