Chapter 2 Biology

TermDefinition
The 5 characteristics of life Response, Organisation, Nutrition, Excretion and Reproduction
Response The ability of organisms to detect and react to changes in their internal and external environments
Organisation The way living things are arranged into cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, individuals and populations to support their metabolism and for reproduction
Nutrition The way organisms obtain and use food
Excretion The removal of wastes made in body cells, e.g. co2 and water
Reproduction The formation of new living organisms of the same species
Biology The study of living organisms
Life Organisms that share common characteristics including, RONER
Metabolism The sum of all chemical reactions in an organism
Anabolic Building up, smaller molecules create bigger ones, e.g. Photosynthesis
Catabolic Breaking down, bigger molecules break down into smaller molecules, e.g. Respiration
CRAP Catabolic —> Respiration, breaking down Anabolic —> Photosynthesis, building up
Cell continuity All cells arise from pre-existing cells
Autotrophic Can make its own food e.g. plants
Heterotrophic Can’t make its own food e.g. humans
