| What are the MAJOR SIDE EFFECTS / ADVERSE REACTIONS of B-12? | 1. Nontoxic, large doses must be ingested to produce side effects: Itching, transitory diarrhea and fever, heart failure, peripheral, vascular thrombosis, pulmonary edema, rash, pain at injection site, Flushing, optic nerve atrophy, hypokalemic |
| What are the contraindications? | Known drug product allergy - - e.g. cobalt |
| What is needed for the absorbtion of B-12? | intestinal absorption requires presence of intrinsic factor in terminal ileum |
| Where is B-12 stored? | principally stored in liver, kidneys and adrenals |
| How is it metabolized? | Converted in tissues to active co-enzymes; enterohepatic cycled |

| What are the interactions? | Use with anticonvulsants, aminoglycoside antibiotics or long-acting potassium preparation decreases the oral absorption. Chloramphenicol antagonizes the hematologic response |
