Unit 8.4 Vocabulary
Space Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Brightness Scale | Measures the brightness of space objects observed from Earth |
| Asteroid | Rocky bodies orbiting the sun, mostly between Mars and Jupiter |
| Meteoroid | Small piece of rock in the solar system that... becomes a meteor if it enters Earth’s atmosphere, and becomes a meteorite if it reaches Earth’s surface |
| Comet | Small icy object orbiting the sun that may have a long “tail” or halo when closer to the sun |
| Model | is a representation of the physical world that describes relationships between different components |
| Relative motion | Described with a clearly identified reference frame (or point) from which an object’s motion is being measured; |
| Orbit | The motion pathway of a solar system object through space |
| Scale | The size and distance of one object relative to another. |
| Friction | The forces caused by one surface or object rubbing against another as they move past each other. |
| Air Resistance | Friction forces caused by the particles of air pushing against the motion of objects moving through them. |
| Vacuum | The lack of any air (atmosphere) particles in a volume |
| Inertia | the tendency to not change in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. |
| Force | A push or pull on an object. |
| Change in motion | A change in the speed or direction of an object. |
| Tangent line: | If an object is moving in a circular path, the line is the direction the object would travel if inward acting forces are removed. |
| Gravity | The force that attracts objects to Earth’s center. |
| Gravitational Force | A force between TWO objects. The magnitude (size) of the force depends on the mass of the objects and the distance between them. |
| Weight | The force from gravity (usually in pounds or newtons) which Earth exerts on another object. |
| Orbital motion | The motion pathway determined by the forces of gravity of objects in space. |
| Nebula | A very diffuse (spread out) collection or cloud, of gas and dust in outer space. |
| Galaxy | A system of solar systems, stars, gas, dust, and other matter. Our own solar system exists in a galaxy named The Milky Way. |
| Solar nebula | A cloud of gas and dust that forms into a star, and sometimes also including a set of orbiting planets and other objects. |
