TermDefinition
Species A group of organisms that are similar and can mate with each other and produce offspring that can reproduce
Fossil The preserved remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past
Adaptation A behavior or physical characteristic that allows an organism to survive or reproduce in its environment
Micro-Evolution The theory that supports gradual changes in physical characteristics within a species
Macro-Evolution The theory that supports the gradual accumulation of new traits over time, leading to the development of new species
Natural Selection A process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce
Variation Any difference between individuals of the same species
Homologous Structures Body parts that are structurally similar in related species
Branching Tree A diagram that shows how different groups of organisms might be related
Petrified Fossil A fossil created when minerals replace all or part of an organism
Mold Fossil formed when a shell or hard part of an organism dissolves leaving an empty space in the shape of that part
Cast A type of fossil that forms when a mold becomes filled in with minerals that later harden
Relative Dating Technique used to determine which of two fossils is older
Radioactive Dating Technique used to determine the actual age of a fossil based on radioactive elements present
Half-Life The time it takes for half the atoms in a radioactive element to decay
Extinct The disappearance of all members of a species
Gradualism The theory that evolution occurs slowly and steadily
Punctuated Equilibrium The theory that new species evolve during short periods of rapid change
