Scientific Method

QuestionAnswer
scientific method set of logical steps used to answer a scientific question
observation gathering information using the 5 senses
hypothesis educated guess or proposed answer to scientific question ; must be testable
experiment this is designed to test a hypothesis
constants conditions kept the same during experiment
control group group NOT receiving the independent variable
experimental group group(s) that DOES receive the independent variable
independent variable aka manipulated ; gets changed ; plotted on x-axis
dependent variable aka responding ; gets measured ; plotted on y-axis
science a way of gathering information by observing and experimenting
analyze data gathered data is review & placed in charts, tables, or graphs
conclusion statement at the end which says if hypothesis is supported or rejected
qualitative data data using descriptions (ex. color)
quantitative data data using numbers and measurements (ex. weight)
PPE (Personal Protective equipment) things worn to keep you safe (ex. gloves, goggles)
theory well-tested explanation based on the results of many repeated experiments
law short statement that predicts the results of observed natural phenomena (certain initial conditions)
one how many independent variables should be tested at one time
applied chemistry chemistry focused on using knowledge for a specific goal or application
pure chemistry chemistry focused on expanding our knowledge [no goal]
inorganic chemistry study of chemicals without carbon
organic chemistry study of chemicals with carbon
biochemistry study of chemicals in living things
wafting indirectly smelling something
sharps container this is where broken glass is disposed of
accuracy getting close to the expected value
precise (precision) the closeness of a series of values
oxygen, heat, & fuel 3 parts of a fire
PASS acronym for remembering the 4 steps in using a fire extinguisher
