Weather/ Water cycle

Weather and Water cycle

TermDefinition
Air pressure A force exerted on a surface from the weight of the air in the atmosphere.
Climate zone An area that has similar average temperatures and precipitation throughout; includes polar, temperate and tropical zones
Climate The average pattern of weather that occurs in certain locations over many years.
Collection/Runoff precipitation gathers back into bodies of water
Condensation The process by which a gas is converted to a liquid
Evaporation The process by which a liquid is converted to a gas by heating the liquid
Equator An imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres.
Hail Pellets or chunks of frozen rain
Humidity The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, usually expressed as either absolute humidity or relative humidity
Latitude A measure of relative position north or south on the Earth's surface, measured in degrees from the equator, which has a latitude of 0°, with the poles having a latitude of 90° north and south
Polar zone A climate zone characterized by very little precipitation and extremely cold temperatures
Precipitation Water that falls from the air to the Earth's surface in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail
Rain liquid precipitation (water that falls to the earth)
Sleet snow that melts and refreezes as it falls
Snow frozen water that falls in small flakes
State of Matter The form matter can take (e.g. solid, liquid, and gas)
Temperate zone A climate zone located between the tropical and polar zones generally characterized by moderate temperatures rather than extremely hot or cold temperatures
Tropical zone A climate zone near the equator characterized by warm temperatures
Water Cycle The path water takes as it is being cycled through the process of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection
Water Vapor The gas state of water.
Weather The condition of the atmosphere at a given time and place.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
