abdomen A body region posterior to the thorax.
appendage An extension of an animal's body; a limb.
arachnid A member of the class Arachnida.
arthropod A member of the phylum Arthropoda.
biological control The control of a pest by the introduction of a natural enemy or predator.
book lung The platelike respiratory structure found in arachnids.
carapace The portion of the exoskeleton that covers the cephalothorax in some arthropods.
caste Among social insects, one of the groups in a colony that performs a particular function.
cephalothorax A body region in some arthropods consisting of a fused head and thorax.
chelicerae The first pair of appendages in arachnids; used for feeding; poisonous fangs in certain spiders.
chrysalis A protective case found in the pupal stage of metamorphosis of some insects, especially lepidopterans.
complete metamorphosis A common type of insect development; four stages are egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
compound eye An eye composed of many individual lenses.
crustacean A member of the subphylum Crustacea.
incomplete metamorphosis A type of insect development in which eggs hatch into nymphs that eventually grow into adults.
insect A member of the class Insecta.
insecticide A chemical or agent that destroys insects.
Malpighian tubule One of the numerous threadlike tubules in insects that extracts wastes from the blood and empties them into the intestine.
mandible A paired chewing mouthpart found in insects and some other arthropods.
metamorphosis A change in shape or form that an animal undergoes in its development from egg to adult.
molt To shed an exoskeleton, scales, feathers or fur.
nymph One of the stages of incomplete metamorphosis in an insect.
pedipalp The second pair of arachnid appendages; used for sensory perception and sperm transfer.
pheromone A chemical released by an animal which influences the behaviour of another animal of the same species.
pupa One of the stages of complete metamorphosis of an insect; the resting or inactive stage.
quarantine Strict isolation to prevent the spread of disease or pests.
swimmeret One of the small appendages on some crustaceans that is used for swimming and reproduction.
spinneret spinneret An organ in spiders and some insects that spins web from the secretions of silk glands.
spiracle One of the small pores in an insect's body that function in breathing.
thorax The body region between the head and the abdomen.
The body region between the head and the abdomen. A tube that extends from the larynx to the bronchi.
