Cells,Cell Transport

TermDefinition
Cells Smallest unit of life
Prokaryote NO NUCLEUS (bacteria); does have DNA , ribosomes, cell wall, cell membrane- no other organelles
Eukaryote Eukaryote- HAS A NUCLEUS (animals, plants, fungi, protist); ALL have DNA and cell membrane
Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells. Cells perform all 8 life functions. All cells are produced from other cells
Exceptions to Cell Theory Mitochondria and Chloroplasts have their own DNA and can reproduce in a cell. Viruses need a host to reproduce
Levels of Organization (Smallest to Largest) atom, element, molecule, organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ system, organism
Selectively Permeable Selectively Regulate what goes in and out of cell
Phospholipid Bilayer 2 layers (bi) of phosphate head and lipid tails
Hydrophilic Water Loving
Hydrophobic Water Hating
Marker Proteins Act as name tag for the cell
Receptor Proteins Sending chemical messages. Messenger molecule binds to one side, message gets sent into cell.
Active Transport ATP MUST BE USED. Going from concentrations of low to high.
Enzymes Protein Catalysts embedded in cell membrane. Catalyze reactions.
Transport Proteins Proteins that physically move molecules across membrane.
Channel Proteins Allow specific molecules to pass through from one side to another.
Diffusion PASSIVE. Movement of molecules from high to low concentration.
Osmosis PASSIVE. Diffusion of WATER.
Hypertonic Solutions that have a high concentration of water. Will cause cells to swell and burst
Hypotonic Solutions that have a low concentration of water. Will cause cells to shrivel
Facilitated Diffusion PASSIVE. Movement of molecules from high to low concentration with a protein channel.
Phagocytosis ACTIVE. Cell Eating- engulfing food particle creating a food vacuole.
Pinocytosis ACTIVE. Cell Drinking- creating water vacuole with dissolved particles.
Endocytosis ACTIVE. Taking in matter by creating a vacuole
Exocytosis ACTIVE. Creating a vacuole to release contents from cell.
Homeostasis Internal Equilibrium

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
