Topic 4 Vocab

Thermal energy All the kinetic and potential energy of all the particles of an object
Heat the energy that is transferred from a warmer object to a cooler object
Temperature How hot or cold something is, a measure of the average energy of motion of particles of a subtance
Conduction the transfer of energy from one particle to another within an object or between two objects that are in direct contact
Convention a type of heat transfer that occurs through the movement of fluids (materials that flow) which can be solid, liquid or gas
Convection current the movement of a fluid caused by differences in temperature, that transfers heat from one part of the fluid to another
Radiation The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves
Conductor a material that conducts heat well
Insulator a material that does not conduct heat well
Specific heat The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 KG of a material by 1 kelvin, which is equivalent to 1 degree Celsius
Thermal expansion The expansion of matter when it is heated
