calibration the adjustment of a piece of equipment so that it operates within its intended standards of performance.
danger zone the range of temperature from 40°F to 140°F at which bacteria grow most rapidly to the levels that cause food poisoning.
discrimination unfair treatment of individuals on the basis of their membership in a specific group, such as age, ethnicity, gender, nationality, or religion.
fire triangle term that describes the three elements of a fire, which include oxygen, fuel, and a heat source.
grounding the act of carrying current safely away from an electrical circuit to prevent shocks from occurring in the event of a problem with the circuit.
harassment unwelcome, offensive, and repeated language or actions based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or genetic information that affect an employee’s job performance or advancement opportunities or create an uncomfortable working
infrastructure term that describes the internal systems that a facility needs to operate, such as power supplies; electrical, plumbing, and heating and cooling systems; water; waste management; and phones and computer systems.
minimum wage the lowest hourly earnings that an employer can legally pay a worker.
overtime pay payment at one and a half times the regular wage for each hour an employee works beyond 40 hours in a week.
soft skills employability skills related to communication, attitude, teamwork, and problem solving that are difficult to teach but critical to workplace success.
work ethic a belief in the benefits of working hard, demonstrating initiative, and being personally accountable for the work you do.
