Fossil Fuels and Sedimentary Rocks

TermDefinition
Cementation dissolved minerals become deposited in the spaces between sediments. These minerals act like glue to hold the sediments together
Compaction the weight of layers of sediment upon layer of sediment causes pressure that will squeeze sediments together
Sedimentary Rock rock formed when particles of other rocks are deposited in layers and are compacted and cemented
Coal a solid fossil fuel that is formed from the remains of plants over very long periods of time. Forms in swampy areas!
Fossil Fuel a natural, nonrenewable fuel, such as coal, oil, or natural gas formed in sedimentary rocks, over longs periods of time, from the remains of living organisms
Natural Gas a flammable material, in a gaseous form, produced from the remains of marine organisms buried under layers of sediment found near oil deposits. Used for cooking, and heating homes
Oil a nonrenewable natural resource produced from the remains of organisms buried under layers of sediments for millions of years
Sandstone a sedimentary rock composed mostly of sand-sized grains of mineral, rock, or organic material
Organic Matter the waste and remains of plants and animals
Sediment solid material that is moved and deposited in a new location
Nonrenewable Resource a natural resource that is used up faster than it can be made by nature. Once it is used up, there is no more available
Deposition laying down of sediment carried by wind, water, or ice
Fault a crack in the Earth’s crust along which movement takes place
Fossil preserved remains of plants and animals whose bodies were buries in sediments
Shale a fine-grained sedimentary rock containing silt- and clay- sized particles
Limestone a sedimentary rock composed of tiny fossils, shell fragments, and fossilized debris.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
