Gravity/Solar System

TermDefinition
Gravity The force that pulls all objects with mass toward one another. Governs the motion of the solar system. The greater the mass of an object, the greater amount of gravitational force.
Mass Mass is the amount of matter in an object. It does not change from location to location
Weight Weight is a measure of gravity exerted on an object
Inner Planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars are "terrestrial planets" that are rockey, solid, and smaller than outer planets.
Outer Planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune are "gas giants" mostly made up of hydrogen and helium.
Mercury Closest planet to the Sun and is slightly larger than Earth’s moon
Venus It is referred to as “Earth’s twin”; similar in size to Earth
Earth It has an atmosphere with water; 70% covered by water
Mars It is referred to as the “Red planet”; Has the biggest, most violent dust storms
Jupiter It is the most massive planet; shortest day of any planet (~10 hours
Saturn It is surrounded by rings; least dense planet
Uranus It rotates on its side; first planet discovered by telescope
Neptune It is nearly 4 times the size of Earth; most violent weather
Terrestrial Planets Inner Planets
Gas Planets Outer Planets
Rotation Rotating around an axis (Ex. Earth on it's axis)
Revolution Rotating around another object(Ex. The moon around the Earth)
Most common elements in space Hydrogen and Helium
Sun The center of our Solar System. We live in it's atmosphere.
Photosphere Surface of the Sun
Corona 3rd and hottest layer of the Sun
Solar Wind Carries particles out and away from the Sun
Sunspots Cool, dark spots on the Sun
Source of Sun's Energy Fusion
Chromosphere 2nd Layer of the Sun
