Asteroids, Meteors and Comets
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Asteroid | A large, potato-shaped object that orbits the Sun – smaller than planets that is composed of rock and metal and has numerous craters on their surfaces |
Comet | "Dirty Snowballs" that revolve around the Sun-long-elliptical orbits-that are made up of ice and dust |
Meteor | *In Earth's Atmosphere* A rocky object that orbits the Sun often composed of nickel and iron. May have been broken off from asteroids/comets. |
Meteorite | *Hit Earth* It can heat up to nearly 2,000 degrees C and produces a streak of light in the sky. Also referred to as “shooting stars”. |
Meteoroid | *In Space* Most meteorites are very small and cause little damage. 3 types of meteorites – stony, stony-iron, and iron |
Asteroid Belt | Located between Mars and Jupiter |
Parts of a Comet | Nucleus, Coma, Tail |
Nucleus | Inner layer of comet's head |
Coma | Outer layer of comet's head |
Tail | Gas and dust pushed away from the comet due to solar wind |
Tail Direction | Always points away from the Sun |
