| Unicellular | One cell that carries out the functions necessary to stay alive. |
| Multicellular | Organisms consisting of many cells |

| Response | An action or change in behavior. |
| Spontaneous Generation | The mistaken idea that living things arise from non-living sources. |
| Homeostasis | The maintenance of stable internal conditions |

| Classification | The process of grouping things based on their similarities |
| Genus | A group of similar, closely-related organisms. |
| Binomial Nomenclature | The system in which each organism is given a unique, two-part scientific name that indicates its genus and species |
| Taxonomy | The scientific study of how organisms are classified. |
| Domain | The broadest level of organization |
| Evolution | The process of change overtime. |
| Convergent Evolution | The process by which unrelated organisms evolve similar characteristics. |
| Virus | A tiny, nonliving particle that enters and then reproduces inside a living cell. |
| Host | An organism that provides a source of energy or a suitable environment for a virus to live. |
| Vaccine | A substance used in vaccination that consists of pathogens, such as viruses, that have been weakened or killed but can still trigger the body to produce chemicals that destroy the pathogens. |
| Bacteria | Single-celled organisms, also known as prokaryotes, that lack a nucleus. |
| Protist | Eukaryotic organisms that cannot be classified as animals, plants, or fungi. |
| Parasite | Organisms that benefit from living with, on, or in a host. |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells that perform a specific function. |
| Vascular Plants | Plants with true vascular tissue. |
| Nonvascular Plants | A low-growing plant that lacks a vascular tissue for transporting materials. |
| Vertebrates | Animals with a backbone. |
| Invertebrates | Animals without a backbone. |
| Organ | A body structure composed of different kinds of tissues that work together. |
| Mammals | A vertebrate whose body temperature is regulated by its internal heat, and has skin covered with hair or fur and glands that produce milk to feed its young. |
