Patterns in the Solar System
| Term | Definition |

| orbit | The path that a body follows as it travels around another body in space |
| phase | In astronomy, the change in the sunlit area of one celestial body as seen from another celestial body; phases of the moon are caused by the changing positions of Earth, the sun, and the moon |
| eclipse | An event in which the shadow of one celestial body falls on another |
| season | A division of the year that is characterized by recurring weather conditions, and determined by both Earth's tilt relative to the sun and Earth's position in its orbit around the sun |
| penumbra | The shadow cast by the earth or moon over an area experiencing a partial eclipse |
| umbra | The fully shaded inner region of a shadow cast by an opaque object, especially the area on the earth or moon experiencing the total phase of an eclipse. |
| waxing moon | The moon at any time after new moon and before full moon, so called because its illuminated area is increasing. |
| waning moon | The moon at any time after full moon and before new moon (so called because its illuminated area is decreasing). |
| crescent | The curved sickle shape of the waxing or waning moon. |
| gibbous | Having the observable illuminated part greater than a semicircle and less than a circle. |
