WW PredictingWeather

WW Predicting Weather: Clouds, Fronts, Air Masses, and Weather Instruments

TermDefinition
Cirro Clouds that form at high altitudes, have wispy edges, made of ice crystals
Cumulo Clouds that are piled up, have sharp outline
Strato Clouds that are spread out like a blanket
Nimbo Rain clouds
Cumulonimbus Thunderstorm clouds, tall piled up rain clouds
Alto Mid-layer clouds
Cloud Formation When millions of water droplets condense on dust particles in the air
Cold Front Formation Forms when a fast moving cold air mass pushes under a warm air mass, forcing the warm air to rise.
Cold Front Weather Thunderheads can form during this front, then cool, dry, fair weather is likely to follow.
Warm Front Formation This front forms when a moist, warm air mass slides up and over a cold air mass.
Warm Front Weather This front brings gentle rain or light snow, followed by warmer, humid weather.
Stationary Front Formation This front forms when warm and cold air meet and neither air mass has the force to move the other. They remain standing still.
Stationary Front Weather Along this front, clouds and fog form, and it may rain or snow. Can bring many days of clouds and precipitation.
Occluded Front Formation This front forms when a cold front catches up to a warm front. The warm air mass rises as the cold front meets up with the cool air mass beyond the warm air mass.
Occluded Front Weather The temperature varies for this front. Can bring several days of clouds and precipitation followed by clear, dry weather.
Air Mass A large body of air that has about the same conditions (temperature, humidity, air pressure) throughout.
Maritime Polar Cold and moist air mass
Maritime Tropical Warm and moist air mass
Continental Polar Cold and dry air mass
Continental Tropical Warm and dry air mass
Low Pressure System Winds blow towards them, typically windy and bad weather
High Pressure System Pushes air away from them, typically have clear blue skies
Temperature A measure of the average amount of motion of molecules
Thermometer Tool used to measure temperature
Rain Gauge Tool used to measure the amount of precipitation
Relative Humidity Compares the amount of water vapor in the air with the amount of water vapor the air could hold at a certain temperature
Psychrometer Tool used to measure relative humidity
Barometer An instrument that measures air pressure
Wind Air that moves in one direction
Wind Vane A tool that measures wind direction
Anemometer A tool that measures wind speed

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
