Unit 8 Vocabulary Strategy

TermDefinition
Introduced Species Foreign or exotic organisms that out-compete native organisms.
Non-Extractive Resource Use of the ocean for transportation and recreation.
Chlorofluorocarbons Chemicals released in the atmosphere that attack and deplete the ozone.
Ballast Water Tankers and cargo ships carry it to balance and maintain buoyancy when trading.
Biological Amplification Concentrated toxic substances found in organisms at the top of the food chain.
Coral Bleaching Pollution causes it to expel their symbiotic zooxanthellae.
Greenhouse effect The trapping of heat by the atmosphere.
Mariculture Farming of marine organisms in estuaries or bays.
Bykill Animals unintentionally killed while collecting a specific organism.
Aquaculture Farming of plants and animals in any water environment under controlled conditions.
EEZ Exclusive Economic Zone The 200 nautical miles from a nation's shoreline of protected resources and economic activity.
Territorial Waters 12 miles from shore where a nation has jurisdiction.
Desalination The separation of pure water from seawater.
Maximum sustainable yield The most that can be caught without impairing future populations of organisms.
Drift net "Walls of death" used for fishing.
Commercial extinction Depletion of a resource species to a point where it is no longer profitable to harvest.
