Watershed | land that drains surface and groundwater into a single body of water |
River Basin | Many interconnecting watersheds |
Estuary | Where freshwater meets salt water |
Aquifer | Large collection of potable ground water |
Salinity | Measure of salt in the water |
Coliform | bacteria present in water |
tributary | a branch of water that eventually connects to a major river |
catalyst | speeds up a reaction |
stewardship | Responsible use and care of earth's resources |
Eutrophication | High concentrations of nitrates that lead to an increase in algae growth |
Upwelling | deep sea nutrients rising to the surface |
chemosynthesis | process of converting chemicals into energy |
Carbon Cycle | organic circulation of carbon from the atmosphere into organisms and back again |
Nitrogen Cycle | transfer of nitrogen from the atmosphere to the soil, to living organisms, and back to the atmosphere |
Turbidity | Amount of solids present in a body of water |
Dissolved Oxygen | Oxygen present in water |
Point Source Pollution | Pollution coming from a specific identifiable source (factories, pipes, containers) |
Nonpoint Source Pollution | Pollution coming from many sources (runoff, agriculture pollution, farm pollution, urban runoff) |
