| Estuary | Where freshwater meets salt water |
| Aquifer | Large collection of potable ground water |
| Salinity | Measure of salt in the water |
| Coliform | bacteria present in water |
| tributary | a branch of water that eventually connects to a major river |
| catalyst | speeds up a reaction |
| stewardship | Responsible use and care of earth's resources |
| Eutrophication | High concentrations of nitrates that lead to an increase in algae growth |
| Upwelling | deep sea nutrients rising to the surface |
| chemosynthesis | process of converting chemicals into energy |
| Carbon Cycle | organic circulation of carbon from the atmosphere into organisms and back again |
| Nitrogen Cycle | transfer of nitrogen from the atmosphere to the soil, to living organisms, and back to the atmosphere |
| Turbidity | Amount of solids present in a body of water |
| Dissolved Oxygen | Oxygen present in water |
| Point Source Pollution | Pollution coming from a specific identifiable source (factories, pipes, containers) |
