| drug-resistant bacteria | strains of a bacterium that have adapted and are no longer controlled or killed by normal antibiotic treatment. |
| Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) | an OSHA regulation aimed at promoting awareness of hazardous substances and understanding of safe handling practices. |
| healthcare-associated infection (HAI) | an infection that is not present when a patient is admitted to a hospital or healthcare facility but develops 48 hours or more after admission. |
| occupational exposure | term for the reasonable expectation for contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials during the performance of job duties. |
