Unit 7 Vocabulary Strategy

TermDefinition
Anadromous Live in saltwater but spawn in fresh water. example: Salmon.
Camouflage Used to go undetected in surroundings where coloring dark top blends with dark depths.
Viviparous Live birth examples: Hammerhead, Mako, Whale Sharks.
Pneumatophore Cnidarians use to float and sail as wind pushes across ocean surface.
Jet Propulsion Some cephalopods propel themselves by ejecting water from their body.
Echolocation The equivalent to biological sonar is used for communication under water.
Swim Bladder A gas filled chamber to aid in pressure differences while swimming.
Bradycardia Slowing of the heart beat when submerged.
Oviparous Lay eggs examples: Zebra sharks.
Siphon Also called water jet; used for propulsion.
Hypothermia A state in which the body's mechanism for temperature regulation is overwhelmed.
Mantle Covering that secretes a shell.
Catadromous Live in freshwater but spawn in salt water. example: eels.
Osmoregulation Maintenance of salt and water concentrations in an organism.
