WW Vocab 1

The Atmosphere, Heat Transfer, and Water Cycle

TermDefinition
Troposphere The lowest layer of the atmosphere (closest to Earth). Where weather takes place and air pressure is the greatest
Stratosphere The second atmospheric layer above Earth’s surface, where the ozone layer is located.
Ozone layer Absorbs ultraviolet radiation, acts as Earth’s natural sunscreen.
Mesosphere The coldest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere, where meteors burn up. Third layer from the Earth’s surface.
Thermosphere The hottest layer of Earth’s atmosphere. The fourth atmospheric layer from Earth’s surface.
Ionosphere The region of ionized air is where auroras, also called the northern and southern lights, occur. This layer is important in radio communication. Radio signals can be “bounced off” this layer.
Exosphere The highest layer of our atmosphere. Layer with the least air pressure.
Radiation The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves, a method in which heat can transfer even through empty space. Warming up by a fire is an example of this.
Conduction The transfer of heat through direct contact. Touching a hot stove would be an example of this.
Convection The transfer of heat in a fluid (gas or liquid) by currents of warm less dense material rising and cool more dense material sinking.
Water Cycle The process by which water circulates among Earth’s atmosphere, oceans and land.
Precipitation Water that falls back to earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Groundwater Water that is absorbed into the ground
Runoff Water that travels over Earth’s surface into a lake, stream, pond, or some other body of water.
Evaporation The process by which the molecules of water in a liquid state move or vibrate with enough energy to be released from other water molecules and travel into the atmosphere.
Evaporate To change from a liquid state to the gas state without boiling.
Sublimation The process by which a solid (ice and snow) can turn directly into water vapor (gas).
Transpiration the process by which plants release water vapor.
Condensation The process by which water vapor changes into a liquid due to a decrease in temperature or pressure.
Water Vapor the gaseous form of water.
Atmosphere The layer of gases that surrounds the Earth.
Air Pressure a measure of how much the air above you weighs
Oxygen Makes up 21% of the Earth's atmosphere

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
