Genetics the study of how characteristics are transmitted from parents to offspring
Heredity transmission of characteristics from parents to offspring
Dominant The stronger gene - cancels out the other weaker one
Recessive The weaker gene- can only be seen when both genes are weak
Phenotype What a trait looks like- physical characteristic
Genotype The actual genes - BbLl
Allele each of 2 or more alternative forms of a gene- the letters of a gene
monohybrid a cross where only 1 characteristic is tracked
dihybrid cross in which 2 characteristics are tracked
Who first came up with the idea of genetics? Gregor Mendel
What are true breeding plants? always produce a certain trait in their offspring - P1
What is law of independent assortment? states that factors separate independently of one another during the formation of gametes
What is law of segregation? states that a pair of factors is segregated or separated during the formation of gametes
When does law of segregation occur? During the formation of reproductive cells
What is an example of heterozygous? both alleles are different (Pp)
What is an example of homozygous? both alleles are alike (PP, pp)
