Water Distribution and River Basins
| Term | Definition |

| Hydrosphere | All the water on or surrounding the surface of the planet (oceans, rivers, lakes and water in the atmosphere) |
| Water Cycle | cycling of water on the Earth through a variety of processes |
| Solvent | A liquid that dissolves substances called solutes (does the dissolving) |
| Aquifer | underground rock layer that contains a vital source of water for human consumption and use |
| Watershed | the area of land where surface water drains when the ground is unable to absorb it |
| River Basin | the area of land drained by a river and its branches |
| Groundwater | Valuable water resource on Earth; water found in the ground that it potable or able to be consumed |
| Salinity | the amount of salt within a solution |
| Potability | a measure of how suitable water is for drinking |
| pH Scale | the scale to identify acids (1-6), bases (8-14) , neutral substances (7) |
| Acids | anything substance measuring below a 7 on the pH scale |
| Bases | anything substance measuring above a 7 on the pH scale |
| Permeability | the ability to have water through something |
| Tributary | small creek-like branch that funnels runoff into a river |
