IPC Unit 4 Solutions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adhesion | tendency of water be attracted to other substances |
| Cohesion | tendency of water to be attracted to another water molecule |
| Polar Molecule | water has an uneven sharing of electrons; hydrogen has a slight positively charged and oxygen has a slight negatively charged |
| Aqueous | solution with water as the solvent |
| Solute | part of the solution which is dissolved |
| Solvent | part of the solution which does the dissolving |
| Solution | mixture made up of a solute and a solvent |
| Universal Solvent | water easily dissolves polar and ionic substances ; ex: salt |
| pH scale | measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in a water based solution |
| Solubility of Gas | will increase with low temperature and high pressure |
| Role of Cell Membrane | maintain homeostasis with the movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane |
| Homeostasis | internal and external balance within an organism |
| Osmosis | the movement of water toward an area with high solute concentration ; the movement of water from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration |
| High Heat Capactiy | aids in sudden change of temperature; it requires a large amount of thermal energy to raise the temperature of water |
| Surface Tension | caused by cohesion ; water molecules on the surface hold more tightly than molecules under |
| Capillary Action | caused by cohesion and adhesion; water molecules climb up the xylem of plants |
| Covalent Bonds | the hydrogen atoms and oxygen atom of a water molecule are held together by ____________________. |
| Hypotonic Solution | the solution has less solutes and more water ; will cause water to move into the cell and swell |
| Hypertonic Solution | the solution has more solutes and less water ; will cause water to move out of the cell and shrink |
| Isotonic Solution | the solution has equal amounts of solutes and water inside and outside of the cell ; water will move equally into and out of the cell |
