Organelle Functions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Membrane | The cell wall; acts like a barrier but with gates, letting only some stuff in and out. |
| Cytoplasm | The stuff that fills the cell that all the organelles float in |
| Organelles | Small organ-like structures of a cell, each with their own function. |
| Cytoskeleton | Proteins, fibers, and tubes that extend throughout the Cytoplasm, giving structure to the cell. |
| Nucleus | The "center" of the cell; holds Chromatin that allows the cell to run and create new cells. |
| ATP | Adenosine Triphosphate |
| Chromatin | The genetic material of the cell needed to make new cells and run the cell. |
| Nuclear envelope | outer layer of Nucleus; separates the Nucleus from Cytoplasm |
| Nuclear pore | hole in Nuclear envelope that allows compounds in and out of the Nucleus. |
| Eukaryotes | Cells with a nucleus; plants and animals |
| Prokaryotes | Cells without a nucleus; bacteria (unicellular organisms) |
| Ribosome | Builds protein by connecting amino acids; works in assembly line. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | Has ribosomes on its surface; builds proteins |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | builds lipids; processes carbohydrates; Modifies chemiclas that are toxic to the cell |
| Golgi Apparatus | Checks and fixes molecules the ER makes; The cell's "packaging center". |
| Mitochondria | Changes energy stored in food into Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) that the cell could use. |
| Lysosome | Digests old organelles and large molecules of carbs, proteins, and lipids. |
| Cilia | Short hair-like things that stick out of the cell surface. Mostly found in unicellular organisms |
| Flagella | long, tail-like things that stick out of the cell's surface. Mostly found in multicellular organisms |
