| Myelin Sheath | Fatty material that forms a covering around nerve fibers |
| Schwann Cell | Type of neuroglial cell that surrounds a fiber of a peripheral nerve, forming a neurilemma and myelin |
| Node of Ranvier | Short region of exposed (unmyelinated) axon between Schwann cells on neurons of the peripheral nervous system |
| Effector | A muscle or gland that effects change in the body |
| Receptor | Specialized cells that provide information about the environment transmits a signal inside the cell |
| Refractory Period | Time period following stimulation during which a neuron or muscle fiber will not respond to stimulus |
| Reflex Arc | Nerve pathway, consisting of a sensory neuron, interneuron, and motor neuron |
| Spinal Nerves | Nerves that arise from the spinal cord |
| Resting Potential | Difference in electrical charge between the inside and outside of undisturbed nerve cell membrane |
| Reflexes | Rapid, automatic response to a stimulus |
| Autonomic Nervous System | Portion of the nervous system that controls the viscera |
| Somatic Nervous System | Motor pathways of the peripheral nervous system that lead to the skin and muscles |
