| Diffusion | The process in which there is movement of a substance from an area of high concentration of that substance to an area of lower concentration. |
| Isotonic | Having the same or equal osmotic pressure. |
| Stenothermal | Capable of living or growing only within a limited range of temperature. |
| Trophic Pyramid | A graphical representation designed to show the biomass of productivity at each trophic level in a given ecosystem. |
| Hypotonic | Having a lower osmotic pressure than a comparison solution. |
| Ectothermic | Having body temperature that varies with the environment. |
| Endothermic | Occurring or formed with absorption of heat. |
| Osmosis | Diffusion of water molecules through a semipermeable membrane from a place of higher concentration to a place of lower concentration until the concentration on both sides is equal. |
| Hypertonic | Having a higher osmotic pressure than a comparison solution. |
| Sessile | Permanently attached to a substrate; not free to move about. |
| Symbiotic Relationships | Those associations in which one organism lives on another, or where one partner lives inside the other. |
| Euryhaline | Tolerating a wide range of salinity. |
| Photosynthesis | Process of converting solar energy into food. |
| Chemosynthesis | Process of converting chemical energy into food. |
| Carbon Cycle | The repeated sequenced movement of carbon through the ecosystem. |
| Phosphorus Cycle | The repeated sequenced movement of phosphorous through the ecosystem. |
| Nitrogen cycle | The repeated sequenced movement of nitrogen through the ecosystem. |
| Nitrification | Process in which nitrogen is fixed into nitrates. |
| Ammonification | Process in which nitrogen gas is converted into ammonia by bacteria. |
| Denitrification | Process in which bacteria convert nitrogen compounds into nitrogen gas. |
