Unit 6 Vocabulary Strategy

TermDefinition
Diffusion The process in which there is movement of a substance from an area of high concentration of that substance to an area of lower concentration.
Isotonic Having the same or equal osmotic pressure.
Stenothermal Capable of living or growing only within a limited range of temperature.
Trophic Pyramid A graphical representation designed to show the biomass of productivity at each trophic level in a given ecosystem.
Hypotonic Having a lower osmotic pressure than a comparison solution.
Ectothermic Having body temperature that varies with the environment.
Endothermic Occurring or formed with absorption of heat.
Osmosis Diffusion of water molecules through a semipermeable membrane from a place of higher concentration to a place of lower concentration until the concentration on both sides is equal.
Hypertonic Having a higher osmotic pressure than a comparison solution.
Sessile Permanently attached to a substrate; not free to move about.
Symbiotic Relationships Those associations in which one organism lives on another, or where one partner lives inside the other.
Euryhaline Tolerating a wide range of salinity.
Photosynthesis Process of converting solar energy into food.
Chemosynthesis Process of converting chemical energy into food.
Carbon Cycle The repeated sequenced movement of carbon through the ecosystem.
Phosphorus Cycle The repeated sequenced movement of phosphorous through the ecosystem.
Nitrogen cycle The repeated sequenced movement of nitrogen through the ecosystem.
Nitrification Process in which nitrogen is fixed into nitrates.
Ammonification Process in which nitrogen gas is converted into ammonia by bacteria.
Denitrification Process in which bacteria convert nitrogen compounds into nitrogen gas.
