Catastrophism Sudden event that causes dramatic change
Uniformitarianism Gradual change over time
Index Fossil a fossil used to determine relative age of rock because it is widespread, abundant, short lived, and unique.
Absolute age Age in years
Relative age Age based on relation to surroundings, oldest to youngest
Law of Superposition New rock forms on top of pre-existing rock
Radiometric dating / Radioactive dating measurement of radioactive material to determine absolute age
Half-Life Amount of time for half of the radioactive elements to break down to stable isotopes.
Fossil preserved remains or traces of ancient life
Ice core cylinder of ice layers used to determine past climate and environmental conditions
Faults Breaks in rock caused by earth quakes
Erosion sediments carried away and deposited in different locations
Unconformities a gap in geologic time seen in the rock layers
Igneous Intrusions magma cutting through layers of pre-existing rock.
Geologic Time Scale (GTS) a timeline of major events in earth's past.
Sedimentary rock Rock formed by compression and cementation of sediment
Igneous rock Rock formed by the cooling of hot magma
Metamorphic rock Rock formed by changing existing rock by putting it under extreme temperatures and pressures.
