Unit 4
Temperature, Thermal Energy, and Heat Notes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| kinetic theory of matter | states that all of the particles that make up matter are constantly in motion. |
| Temperature | a measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in an object. |
| Degrees | equally spaced units between two points. |
| thermometer | an instrument used to measure temperature. |
| Celsius scale | uses units called Degrees Celsius. |
| Fahrenheit scale | uses units called Degrees Fahrenheit. |
| Kelvin scale | uses units called Kelvins. |
| Thermal energy | the total kinetic energy of all particles in a substance. |
| Heat | the energy transferred from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature. |
| Conduction | the transfer of energy as heat from one substance to another through direct contact. (HINT: Warming a pot on the stove.) |
| Convection | the transfer of energy as heat by the movement of a liquid or gas. (HINT: Hot water cooking macaroni noodles.) |
| Radiation | the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. (HINT: Sitting in the hot sun getting a tan.) |
