Temperature, Thermal Energy, and Heat Notes

TermDefinition
kinetic theory of matter states that all of the particles that make up matter are constantly in motion.
Temperature a measure of the average kinetic energy of all the particles in an object.
Degrees equally spaced units between two points.
thermometer an instrument used to measure temperature.
Celsius scale uses units called Degrees Celsius.
Fahrenheit scale uses units called Degrees Fahrenheit.
Kelvin scale uses units called Kelvins.
Thermal energy the total kinetic energy of all particles in a substance.
Heat the energy transferred from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature.
Conduction the transfer of energy as heat from one substance to another through direct contact. (HINT: Warming a pot on the stove.)
Convection the transfer of energy as heat by the movement of a liquid or gas. (HINT: Hot water cooking macaroni noodles.)
Radiation the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. (HINT: Sitting in the hot sun getting a tan.)
