Ecology Study Guide
Ecology, Food Webs and Photosynthesis Study Guide
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ecology | The study of the relationships and interactions of living organisms and their environments |
| Habitat | The place where an organism lives |
| Producer | Can make its own food, plants are an example |
| Photosynthesis | Sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water = glucose (food) and oxygen |
| Sun | Source of all energy |
| Herbivore | Eats plants (producers) |
| Carnivore | Eats only animals |
| Omnivore | Eats both plants and animals |
| Consumer | CAN NOT make its own food eats producers or other consumers |
| Decomposer | Gets energy by breaking down dead organisms and absorbing the nutrients |
| Scavenger | They eat primarily dead organisms, a type of consumer. NOT a decomposer. |
| Autotroph | Organisms that can make their own food |
| Chlorophyll | The green pigment inside the chloroplast of a plant cell |
| Organism | An individual living thing that is able to perform simple acts of survival. |
| Population | A group of the same types of organisms living in the same area at the same time |
| Community | All the different populations of organisms living in the same area at the same time |
| Ecosystem | All the organisms and the physical environment with which they interact |
| Abiotic | All the nonliving things in an ecosystem |
| Biotic | All the living things in an ecosystem |
| Primary Consumer | Organism that gets their energy from producers |
| Secondary Consumer | Organism that gets their energy from primary consumers |
| Tertiary Consumer | Organism that gets their energy from secondary consumers |
| Biosphere | All of the parts of Earth and surrounding atmosphere where there is life |
| Glucose | The sugar/food that is a product of photosynthesis |
