Magnetism and Electricty
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| poles | The places on a magnet where the force is the strongest |
| attract | The pulling together of two unlike poles of a magnet |
| repel | the pushing apart of two like poles of a magnet |
| magnetism | the invisible force that surrounds every magnet |
| magnetic field | the space in which the lines of force are found |
| lines of force | lines along which a magnetic force acts |
| electromagnet | temporary magnet created by the flow of electrons |
| compass | magnets that align themselves with the Earth's poles |
| conductor | a material that allows electrical energy to flow through easily |
| insulator | materials that prevent the flow of electrons |
| voltage | the difference in electrical potential, measured in volts |
| current electricity | the movement of electrons which creates the flow of electricity |
| static electgricity | the buildup of electric charge on an object that remains until it is quickly discharged. |
| resistance | a measure of how difficult it is for electrons to flow. measure in ohms |
| switches | used to open and close circuits |
| fuses & circuit breakers | devices that will either melt or trip to prevent the build up of heat that may cause a fire |
