| abiotic | Non-living matter in an ecosystem |
| Chloroplast | organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy in the process of photosynthesis |
| Mitochondria | An organelle found in large numbers in most cells, whrere respiration - the release of energy occurs. |
| Population | A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area |
| Community | All the different populations that live together in an area |
| animal cell | does not have a cell wall or chloroplast and a small vacuole |
| plant cell | contains a cell wall, chloroplast and large vacuole |
| Photosynthesis | Plants use the sun's energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into an energy rich molecule, glucose |

| Autotroph | An organism that makes its own food, also known as a PRODUCER |
| Heterotroph | An organism that cannot make its own food, also known as a CONSUMER |
| Glucose | An energy rich molecule that is a product of photosynthesis and a reactant in respiration |
| oxygen | A by-product of photosynthesis and a reactant for respiration |
| chlorophyll | green pigment contained in chloroplasts of plant cells |
