Chapter 4 Physiology
Biomolecules
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Carbohydrates. Lipids. Proteins. Nucleic Acid and related molecules. | Four major groups of organic substances that are very important in the human body. |
| Glucose | The most important simple sugar; Present in the dry state as a straight chain but curls into a cyclic compound when dissolved in water. |
| Energy. Molecular Structure. Cell Membrane Components. Extracellular Matrix. Dietary Fiber. | The major functions of human carbohydrates compounds. |
| Lipids | Water-insoluble organic biomolecules. |
| Triglycerides | The most abundant lipids; Function as the body's most concentrated source of energy. |
| Phospholipids | Lipid compounds similar to triglycerides. |
| Steroids | A large and important class of lipids whose molecules have as their main feature the steroid nucleus. |
| Cholesterol | Steroid found in the plasma membrane surrounding every body cell. |
| Amino Acids | Elements that make up a protein molecule are bonded together to form chemical units. |
| Peptide Bond | Binds the carboxyl group of one amino acid to the amino group of another amino acid. |
