Vocabulary for Yr 10 Acids & Bases Topic

Indicator A substance which will change colour according to the pH.
Chemical Reaction A process that occurs when chemical substances are changed into new substances.
Alkali A base which can be dissolved (is soluble) in water.
Acid A chemical substance which releases hydrogen ions (H+) and has a pH of less than 7.0.
Salt A chemical compound containing a metal ion and a non-metal ion.
Neutral A substance with a pH of 7.0. It is not an acid or a base.
Dilute A solution that contains a small number of particles dissolved in it.
Compound A substance made of more than one type of atom, chemically combined in a fixed ratio.
Base A chemical substance that will remove hydrogen ions from solution. It has a pH of more than 7.0.
Corrosive A substance that will damage the surface of another substance.
Density The amount of mass (weight) an object has, in relation to its volume (the space it takes up).
Concentrated A solution that has a large number of particles dissolved in it.
Ion An atom which has lost or gained electrons.
Neutralisation A chemical reaction that occurs when an acid and base are combined to result in a pH of 7.0.
