Topic 1 test Science
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| System | A group of parts that work together as a whole |
| Atmosphere (AIR) | The outermost layer of the Earth, made up of air and gasses. Contains Earth's weather |
| Geosphere (ROCK & METAL) | The solid metal inner core, liquid metal outer core, and rocky mantle and crust of Earth |
| Hydrosphere (WATER) | All of Earth's water (including the rain/snow/hail/sleet that comes through the atmosphere |
| Cryosphere (FROZEN) | The frozen part of the hydrosphere. It is the portion of the Earth's surface where water is in solid form (ice & snow) |
| Biosphere (LIVING THINGS) | Any part of Earth that contains living organisms |
| Energy | The ability to do work. Earth has 2 main sources of energy: heat from the sun and heat from Earth's inside |
| Topography | The shape of the land, and includes elevation, relief, and landforms |
| Landform | The natural features of the Earth's surface; Some examples are mountains, coastlines, and dunes |
| Mountain | A landform with high elevation and high relief |
| Coastline | A line that forms the boundary between the land and the ocean or a lake |
| Dune | A hill of sand piled up by the wind |
| River | A natural stream of water that flows into another body of water, such as an ocean, lake, or another river |
| Delta | A landform made of sediment that is deposited where a river flows into an ocean or lake |
| Model | Helps you understand how things work |
| Constructive Forces | They build up the land |
| Destructive Forces | They wear away or destroy the land |
| Water Cycle | The continual movement of water among Earth's atmosphere, oceans, and land surface through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation |
| Evaporation | The process by which molecules at the surface of a liquid absorb enough energy to change to a gas |
| Transpiration | The process of which by water is lost in a plant's leaves |
| Condensation | The stage in state from a gas to liquid |
| Precipitation | Any form of water that falls from clouds and reaches Earth's surface as rain, snow, sleet, or hail |
| Watershed | The land area that supplies water to a river system |
| Aquifer | An underground layer of rock or sediment that holds water |
| Well | A hole sunk into the ground to reach a supply of water |
| Process | A series of actions or operations leading toward a particular result |
