Types of Climates
| Term | Definition |

| climate | the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period |
| tropical wet | hot and muggy year-round, supports dense tropical rainforests, heavy rainfall, frequent showers and thunderstorms, warm temperatures all year |
| tropical wet and dry | winters are dry and summers are wet, supports savannahs, temperatures remain high throughout the year |
| semiarid | usually border desert climates, considerable change of temperature between day and night, little precipitation |
| arid (desert) | drier than semiarid, little to no precipitation |
| Mediterranean | hot and dry summers, mild and rainy winters, occur on the west side of continents |
| humid subtropical | warm to hot summers, cool winters, even rainfall throughout the year, |
| Marine West Coast | ocean influences seasonal temperature, moderate precipitation, low clouds, fog, and drizzle are common |
| humid continental | great temperature difference between warmest and coldest months, snowfall may be substantial |
| subarctic | short and cool summers, bitterly cold winters, freezes are common, most precipitation falls in the summer |
| tundra | dry, brief and chilly summer, long and very cold winter, continuous permafrost |
| icecap | coldest on earth, meager precipitation, summer temperatures rarely rise above freezing |
