Cell Part Vocab: Learning the parts of the cell

Cell Membrane Protects the cell and controls what enters and leaves the cell
Cell Wall Thick cellulose outer covering of the plant cell
Chloroplast Captures energy from sunlight to produce food for the cell. *Contains green pigment (color) *only in plant cells
Cytoplasm Gel-like substance in which cell parts move and where many of the cell’s life activities take place
Endoplasmic Reticulum(ER) Network of passage ways that carry material from one part to another.
Golgi Bodies Stores, packages, and transports newly made proteins until they can be released through the cell membrane. “Post Office”
Lysosome Small organelles containing chemicals that break down food parts and old cells
Mitochondria Produces energy for the cell to use by breaking down substances“The energizer battery of the cell”
Nucleus Controls the cell and directs all the cells activities
Nuclear membrane(envelope) Ribosome make protein in the nucleolus
Ribosome Protein producing factories. Protein produces chemical messages that run a cell
Vacuole Storage for food, water, and waste. Plants only have one and animals have several small ones.
