Chemistry

QuestionAnswer
Define atoms. Make up matter
Define electrons electrons,-found outside nucleus Have negative charge
Define neutrons neutrons-found in nucleus Have no charge
Define protons protons –found in nucleus Have positive charge
Define element made up of one type of atom
Define molecule atoms of the same element bonded together ie) O2
Define compound made up of two or more different elements that combine chemically i.e) H2O-water; CO2; CO
Define mixture give a example Mixture- made of substances that combine physically Can be solids, liquids or gases or combinations of both i.e) sand and baking soda; chocolate chip ice cream
Explain the difference between a solution and suspension. Give an example of each. Solution-two or more substances are mixed evenly like salt and water Suspensions-gas or liquid has another substance that are not evenly spread throughout it white blood cells are suspensions Unlike solutions, substances can sink to the bottom.
Explain why blood is a suspension. Blood stays together in body b/c heart keeps blood flowing and blood cells suspended
What is the relationship between ribosomes and golgi apparatus? Ribosomes make proteins which the golgi apparatus modifies and then packages in vesicles to be shipped out of the cell.
What is the relationship between chloroplasts and mitochondria? Chloroplasts make glucose and mitochondria break glucose for energy. Plants have both. Animals only have mitochondria.
What is the difference between a suspension and a solution? Solution and suspensions are mixtures that have substances mixed evenly though out but in a suspension substances can separate and fall to the bottom.
What is the difference between lipids and proteins? Why do cells get more energy from carbohydrates? LIPIDS- fats and oils; do not mix with water -release a larger amount of energy than carbohydrates; harder to break down -found in cell membranes; make cell membrane selectively permeable b/c fats and oils do not mix with water PROTEINS- made up of amino acids -make up many structures like muscle -make up enzymes- regulate all chemical reactions in cell;can speed up the rate of a reaction Cells get more energy from carbs b/c the bonds are easier to break
What is the difference between a control group and experimental group? Control group is not changed and is used for comparison.Experimental group has one variable that is changed.
What is the difference between an independent and dependent variable. An independed variable is what you change in an experiment. The dependent variable is changed by the independent variable.
Define hypothesis and prediction. Hypothesis-A possible explanation or answer to a question; uses the word affect Prediction- An IF-THEN statement - States in advance the results of the experiment
When presented with an experimental scenario you must be able to identify the parts of the scientific method. You must also able to create 22-24 when given an experimental scenario. For example…..when studying the effects of sunlight on concentration what would be the hypothesis, prediction, control group, experimental group, independent variable, dependent variable
Explain facilitated diffusion molecules are too large to pass across cell membrane and use transport molecules allow them to enter and leave. -I.e.) like the window in a drive through

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
