what are earth's three spheres? lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere
what is the densest of earth's spheres? the lithosphere
what is the Atmosphere? a layer of gases surrounding the earth above the liquid water and rocks
what are the gases that make up most of the atmosphere? nitrogen and oxygen
what is the hydrosphere? a layer of water that lies between the atmosphere and rocky material
what makes up the hydrosphere? oceans, lakes, rivers, icecaps, etc...
what elements make up water? hydrogen and oxygen (h2o)
what shape is the earth the earth is almost a perfect sphere (oblate spheroid)
due to earth's rotation... it is slightly bulged at the equator and slightly flattened at the poles
the altitude of polaris... increases/decreases depending on your latitude
polaris is the north star
polaris remains in a fixed position above the north pole
what is the equator? an imaginary horizontal line circling the earth halfway between the north and south poles
the equator is the reference line for latitude (0 degrees latitude)
what is the prime meridian? an imaginary vertical line from the north pole to the south pole that passes through greenwich, england
the prime meridian is the reference line for longitude (0 degrees longitude)
what is the international date line? 180 degrees east or west of the prime meridian
the international date line is on the direct opposite side of the earth from the prime meridian
the prime meridian and the international date line connect at the poles (north and south) and form a circle that cuts the earth in half vertically (eastern and western hemispheres)
what is latitude? the angular distance north or south of the equator measured from the center of the earth
the lines of latitude lines run east to west but measure north to south
what is longitude? the angular distance east or west of the prime meridian measures from the center of the earth
the lines of longitude run north to south but measure east to west
the world rotates 360 degrees in 24 hours, so how many degrees does it spin in 1 hour? 15 degrees

what is the logical starting point for time zones? greenwich, england
the world rotates counterclockwise (west to east)
