3) Chem for Bio PPW

Biology Revision 1

QuestionAnswer
What are the 6 properties of water? Explain them 1-Cohesion (H-bonds holds H2O together) 2- High specific heat (H2O stabilizes the temp) 3-High heat of vaporization(evap. cools body surface) 4-Low density of ice (allows fish to live in winter) 5-Solubility (molecules move freely in cell) 6-Adhesion
What are the 4 types of macromolecules? 1-Carbohydrates 2- Lipids (fat) 3-Protein 4-Nucleis acids
Name the linkage bond, the typical monomer and the polymer of protein. Example + function Linkage bond: Peptide Typical monomer : Amino Acid Polymer: Polypeptide Example: Lactase (enzyme), Actin (movement), Insulin (regulation), Antibody (Cell identity), keratin (structure), Albumin (storage), hemoglobin (transport)
Name the linkage bond, the typical monomer and the polymer of nucleic acid. Example + function Linkage bond: Phospodiester Typical monomer : nucleotide Polymer: nucleic acid Example: DNA (Gene), RNA (Gene expression), ATP (energy transfer)
Name the linkage bond, the typical monomer and the polymer of carbohydrates. Example + function Linkage bond: Glycosidic Typical monomer : Monosccharide Polymer: Polysaccharide Example: Cellulose (plant cell wall), Chitin (animal/fungi support), Stratch (plant energy store), glycogen (animal energy store)
Name the linkage bond, the typical monomer and the polymer of lipid. Example + function Linkage bond: Ester 1- Sub-unit: glycerol+ 3 fatty acids, Type of lipid: triglyceride, Example: Body fat (insulation) 2- Sub-unit: glycerol+ 3 fatty acis+ P, Type of lipid: Phospolipid, Example: Plasma membrane
What is dehydration synthesis? When H2O is taken out of the reaction (condensation)
What is hydrolysis? When H2O is added to the reaction
What are the monosaccharides of sucrose, maltose and lactose (they're disaccharites)? 1- Sucrose=Glucose+Fructore 2- Maltose=Glucose+Glucose 3-Lactose=Glucose+Galactose
What are glycosidic bonds? They're the bonds in carbohydrates. They're formed by the condensation rxn, they're covalent bonds that link ring-shaped sugar molecules to other molecules
What are the differences between DNA and RNA? (DNA has deoxyribose while RNA has ribose)(DNA has AGTC while RNA has AGUC)(DNA is doucle helix while RNA is single stranded)(DNA is in the nucleus/mitochondria while RNA is inside nucleus/cytoplasm)(DNA is the gene while RNA is the gene expression)
Explain protein synthesis :D DNA--(transcription)--» RNA--(translation)--» polypeptide (protein)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
